AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA GEOTOURISM COLLABORATION: ‘THE VOLCANO AS A WORLD CLASS SUSTAINABLE GEOTOURISM DESTINATION’, 18-19 JULY 2024, SYDNEY.
The main GeoFestival and International Geotourism Conference (GFIGC) initiated by the Indonesian Geoparks Network (IGN) is a geopark network in Indonesia comprising 10 UNESCO global geoparks and more than 10 national geoparks. https://bit.ly/3PmPdPg . The annual GFIGC event of the IGN aims at sharing ideas and experiences in the promotion, exchanges, and research of all the geoparks in Indonesia, and building a stronger and more effective network to support sustainable development in local communities.
In 2024, this major event will be held consecutively over three venues in two countries. It begins with a Volcanic Youth Camp at Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark in East Java, followed by the main event at Rinjani-Lombok UNESCO Global Geopark Lombok.
GFIC concludes with a one-day workshop - ‘GEOFEST 2024 Sydney Workshop’ to be held at The University of Sydney on Thursday 18 July. Field trips to the Blue Mountains WHA, the Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion, and to South Coast volcanics at Kiama on the following day, with an optional wildlife tourism session on the Saturday.
The Workshop, to be addressed by invited speakers from both Indonesia and Australia, will focus on topics relevant to volcanic geotourism destinations, as follows.
* Sustainable tourism and regional development with special reference to volcanic landscape in Australia.
* Economic benefits and sustainable development of geopark development in Indonesia.
* Overview of volcanic geotourism destinations of Australia.
* Roles of the Indonesian Geoparks Network in geotourism promotion.
* Identified Roles of geoscientists in geotourism and geopark development in Indonesia.
* Guiding and interpreting volcanic landscape in Far North Queensland, volcanic geotour organisation and challenges (Undara Lava Tubes pictured).
* Challenges of geotourism and geopark operation and management in Indonesia.
* On digital technology application in volcanic geotourism and opportunities for Geoscientists.
*Overview of volcanic geotourism in NZ.
* Q & A + Panel discussions featuring ‘Geotourism and Sustainable Development’, and ‘Employment Opportunities for Geoscientists’.
The Sydney Workshop represents an early response to the MOU between the AGC and the IGN that was executed on 25 May 2023. This event is being hosted by these two groups and The University of Sydney and co-hosted by generous sponsorship from the Sydney Minerals Discussion Group (SMEDG) and various prominent AGC societies, which so far includes the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and The AusIMM.
FURTHER INFORMATION, noting that early registration will open in March through www.geofest.com.au or by email to the Convenor Dr Young Ng

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES STILL AVAILABLE – GEOFEST 2024 SYDNEY WORKSHOP

GFIC concludes with a one-day workshop - ‘GEOFEST 2024 Sydney Workshop’ to be held at The University of Sydney (USYD) on Thursday 18 July. Three field trips have been arranged on the following day, with an optional wildlife tourism session on the Saturday.
The workshop, to be addressed by invited speakers from both Indonesia and Australia, will focus on topics relevant to volcanic geotourism destinations.
The workshop is further evidence of the increasing momentum in establishing geotourism as a significant cultural and economic activity in Australia. We anticipate an attendance of about 150 participants from Australia and Indonesia including government representatives, geotourism professionals and academics, ecotourism operators, interested geoscientists and university students. It is structured as a low-cost event to attract students providing an opportunity for students to engage with Indonesians and to learn more about their culture, particularly as it relates to appreciation of landscapes and geology. Gaining an early understanding of the concept of geotourism is also offered.
The principal organisations that are sponsoring this workshop are the AGC and USYD, and the professional geoscience bodies as co-hosts and generous sponsors i.e., The Sydney Minerals Exploration Group (SMEDG), The AusIMM (including the Sydney Branch), and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists. By supporting geotourism both generally and at their respective operational sites, Australian mining companies with operations in Indonesia will see benefit in sponsorship adding to their ESG credentials, including building goodwill with Indonesian communities.
Significantly a major benefit to participating industry geoscientists is the commitment to international outreach and the support of any project that has the capacity of generating new geoscience-related employment. Registration at www.geofest.com.au
