Arts and Recreation

The Arts and Recreation sector is made up of organisations in sports clubs, recreation, lotteries, casinos and gambling, creative arts, health and fitness, amusement parks, performing arts venues, music and theatre, parks and gardens, zoos, museums, and horse and dog racing.

The sector includes 28,300 organisations and employs 246,400 people.

Arts and Recreation services is a small but growing industry, with a relatively young workforce, where part time work is common.

Creative Industries categories focus on original creation and interpretation in performance and presentation, and these things are hard to automate and replace. However, technology is widely used in support of creative activities in music, theatre, art and design. Blockchain is being used in digital rights and IP management to better protect the rights of content creators.

Technology presents opportunity for Museums, Zoos, Performing Arts and Creative Arts, which are already using AR, VR and robotics to advantage.

VR, AR and AI are also used in Sport and Physical Recreation and in Sporting codes of all kinds to measure and enhance performance, and create personalised training regimes for athletes.

Technology is also widely used in Amusement Parks and Gambling activities.

AI is increasingly able to replicate and produce “original” content for publishing for web and print media, and support the creation of avatars and animation in film and television. The training of AI Large Language models has raised copyright issues, which are being challenged in court.

It is still early days, but inevitably there will be more challenges to actors, performers and designers in years to come.

How can museums use virtual reality? Virtual reality has been going through yet another cyclical revival driven largely by improvements in hardware resulting in a new surge of public interest. But how can museums use virtual reality? Where are the truly exciting opportunities for museums? And how do we get beyond just having to manage visitor expectations and the resultant problems with ‘more tech’?
