Saltram fruit comes primarily from the 45-hectare vineyard surrounding our winery and cellar door, from the cooler hills of Eden Valley and the warmer areas across the Barossa Valley floor.

The Saltram Vineyard has predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, and some smaller plantings of other varieties such as Tempranillo and Sangiovese.

Vines on the Saltram vineyard are supplementary irrigated, with drip irrigation applied sparingly other than extended dry spells and extreme weather events, especially with older vines planted in the 1950's and 1960's. This encourages the vines to develop deeper, self-sustaining root systems and produce smaller berries with concentrated flavours and higher tannin levels

In good years, select parcels from theses vines go into our renowned Saltram No.1 Shiraz and various other special blends.

Today, Alex is keen to bring new ideas to the Saltram portfolio and is particularly interested in exploring Single Vineyard Wines within the Barossa.

Alex remains heavily involved in all facets of the vineyard and its influence on winemaking styles. Working with different varieties and sub regions of the Barossa Valley ensures Alex is extremely enthusiastic about the quality of Barossa Valley wines.

Alex lives on the coast of South Australia with his wife and son - and his beloved antique 1948 Italian coffee machine. Alex is also keen lover of photography and jazz, and has an interest in food and wine integration, establishing the ‘Taste (sans frontieres)’ to encourage food discussions with local winemakers.
